Malta and the EIB

We have supported Malta with key investments, starting with the expansion of Valletta Grand Harbour’s commercial port. Over the years, we have financed crucial sectors, including access to finance for small businesses, urban regeneration, climate action, telecommunications, and the construction of energy-efficient, affordable homes.

We have also backed flagship projects like the parliament building and the open-air theatre at Valletta’s city gate.

President Calviño completes tour of 27 EU capitals

Over the past 12 months the president of the European Investment Bank Group, Nadia Calviño has travelled across the European Union, from Stockholm to Nicosia, Vilnius to Valletta, Madrid to Zagreb, listening to the views of finance ministers, prime ministers and presidents, engaging with partners, gaining insights into current projects financed by the European Union and giving shape to the EIB Group’s 8 strategic priorities.

Malta and the EIB

We have worked in Malta since 1979, supporting many small businesses by lending to local banks. We invested in many major infrastructure projects, such as a new parliament building, an open-air theatre and Valletta’s City Gate, a UNESCO World Heritage site. More recently, we committed to supporting telecom operator Epic in implementing its mobile network modernisation programme, including the continued development of its state-of-the-art 5G mobile infrastructure.

SMEs: The small giants of Europe

The European Investment Bank Group provided €20 billion in financing to small and middle-sized companies in Europe in 2023, supporting more than 400 000 businesses and sustaining over 5,4 million jobs. In Malta, Calypso Radio used this financing to modernise its studios.
