EIB at the 2020 UN General Assembly and Climate week

Every year, the General Assembly of the United Nations (UNGA) gathers heads of states and representatives of key institutions to discuss global issues such as development, peace and security, international law and climate change. This year marks the 75^th anniversary of UNGA, with a special focus on COVID-19, the Green recovery, the progress on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), gender equality, biodiversity and the importance of multilateral cooperation.

In parallel, the EIB participated in Climate Week NYC (September 21-27, 2020), the biggest climate summit taking place this year. As the focus shifts to how we rebuild after COVID-19, Climate Week NYC 2020 explored what lessons we can learn in the pursuit of a net-zero future through a just transition.

The European Investment Bank participated in an array of events during the two summits. President Hoyer, Vice-President Ambroise Fayolle and EIB experts discussed the EIB’s response to the global healthcare emergency and the fight against climate change.

Our key events

• The Green recovery (16-17 September)
  To focus on what comes next, the EIB co-organised a two-day virtual conference on the path to a Green recovery.
• City Climate Finance Gap Fund launch (23 September)
  The EIB held an event to bring together high-level champions and partners of the Gap Fund for a discussion on the role of partnerships and targeted finance in driving forward climate-informed urbanisation, particularly in the context of pandemics like COVID-19.
• Digital Cooperation: Action Today for Future Generations (23 September)
  This high-level virtual event focused on concrete actions to safeguard the technological era for future generations. It is our global shared responsibility to find a path forward and to build back better digitally. Read EIB President Werner Hoyer's statement
• Financing SDGs in the light of COVID-19 (23 September)
  This roundtable looked at new initiatives from leading financial institutions to help create financially feasible and sustainable programmes that will push the international community forward in its commitment to fulfill the SDGs in the light of COVID-19.
