Following the general election in Malta on 9 March 2013, Mr Edward Scicluna has taken office as Minister for Finance. Mr Scicluna also becomes EIB Governor for the Republic of Malta.
He was also elected in 2009 to the European Parliament where he served for four years as Vice-Chairman of the Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee and as the European Parliament's representative on the European Statistical Advisory Board.
His previous appointments include that of Professor and Head of the Department of Economics at the University of Malta.
Between 1999 and 2003, Mr Scicluna served as Chairman of the Malta Council of Economic and Social Development and as Chairman of the Malta Financial Services Authority from 1997 to 1999.
He was the Director of the Central Bank of Malta between 1996 and 2003 and Board member of the National Euro Change-over Committee between 2005 and 2008.
Internationally, he carried out consultancy work for the European Commission, UNESCO and UNEP and served on the Council of Europe Development Bank Auditing Board.
Mr Scicluna, born in Naxxar in 1946, holds degrees in politics and economics from the University of Oxford and the University of Malta, as well as a Masters and Doctorate in Economics from the University of Toronto.
