Ms Zyta Gilowska has been reappointed to the post of Polish Minister of Finance, a position she already occupied from January to June of this year, replacing Mr Stanislaw Kluza, who has now been appointed to head Poland's financial supervisory authority. Ms Gilowska thus also becomes EIB Governor for Poland.
Ms Gilowska, 56 years old, is a graduate of Warsaw University's Institute of Economic Sciences. In 1981, she gained a doctorate in economics at Lublin's Maria Curie-Sklodowska University, where she worked as an assistant from 1972 to 1985 and as an associate professor from 1995 to 1999. Since 2001, she has been a full professor at the Catholic University of Lublin. She is the author of over 220 academic publications on the subject of public finance.
Until 1994 she was not affiliated to any political party. From 1994 to 1996 she was member of the National Council of the Freedom Union. From 1992 to 1998 she was Poland's delegate to the Council of Europe Congress of Local and Regional Authorities of Europe in Strasbourg. From 1992 to 1995 she served as deputy chair of the Polish President's Council for Territorial Self Government and from 1993 to 1995 was a member of the Joint Government and Territorial Self-Government Commission. She was a deputy leader of the opposition Civic Platform party, which she left on 21 May 2005.
