Ukraine and the EIB

EIB operations focus on financing transport, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), energy efficiency as well as municipal and social infrastructure. Since the start of our activities in Ukraine, we have committed more than €1.9 billion to support small and medium companies and €3.6 billion to support the public sector.

Creating a modern transport system supportive of local mobility and better connectivity with the EU enables sustainable economic growth. We helped finance the extension and upgrade of the Kharkiv metro network and facilitated the railway connection between Ukraine and the EU by supporting the construction of the Besky railway tunnel. We have also supported urban road safety projects, creating safer zones for pedestrians and cycling paths.

Our priorities include the digitalisation of the public sector and broadband rollout. In this context, the EIB is helping modernise postal services in Ukraine by financing new IT systems and sorting machines, which will ensure the quality and affordability of postal services.

The EIB also supports local private sector development in the country’s agri-food sector, as well as research and innovation investments such as the Campus Project in UNIT.City. Furthermore, to address the COVID-19 crisis, the EIB is providing support to Ukraine in the framework of the “Team Europe” initiative.
