After Mr Mario Monti, who remains Prime Minister of Italy, relinquished his position as finance minister, Mr Vittorio Grilli was appointed on 11 July 2012 to replace him as Minister of Finance.
Mr Grilli also becomes EIB Governor for the Italian Republic.
Mr Grilli was born in Milan in 1957. He holds a degree in Discipline Economiche e Sociali from Luigi Bocconi University in Milan and a M.A and Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Rochester, NY.
In the United States, from 1986 to 1990, he was Professor of Economics at the Department of Economics at Yale University, and later in the UK, from 1990 to 1994, he was Professor of Financial Economics at Birkbeck College, University of London.
Prior to his appointment as Minister of Finance, Mr Grilli served as Deputy Minister of the Ministry of Economy and Finance of Italy from November 2011 until 11 July 2012. From 2005 to 2011, he was Director General of the Treasury, and before that, from 2002 to 2005, he was General Accountant of the Italian State at the Ministry of Economy and Finance.
From 1994 to 2000, he served as Head of the Department of Economics and Financial Analysis and Privatizations, and also served ad interim, from 1996 to 1997, as the Head of Public Debt and Treasury.
In the private sector, he has worked as Managing Director at Credit Suisse First Boston, London. He was President for several years of the Italian Institute of Technology and a Board member in several listed and unlisted companies, including: Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, ENEL S.p.A, Alitalia, and a member of the EIB’s Board of Directors from October 1995 to December 1999.
He has published numerous articles and books on national and international economic policy. He is currently member of the European think tank Bruegel and of the Aspen Institute Italia.
