Roads are crucial for getting from one place to another safely and comfortably. In 2019, nine-month pregnant Mai, living in a small village in Laos, did not feel comfortable taking the road that connected her home to the nearby hospital as it was in terrible shape and dangerous. The road passing through Mai's village was finally paved and improved in 2020. Today, Mai can securely take her daughter to school, and other services are more easily accessible to local residents. The European Union and the European Investment Bank supported the Lao government in rehabilitating 1 400 km of unpaved roads in six provinces in Laos. The upgraded road network now guarantees safe transport for 1.6 million people. Discover Mai's full story in our video.
